Coronavirus in Mississippi: 549 new cases, 31 deaths reported Saturday

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 549 new cases of COVID-19 and 31 coronavirus-related deaths on Saturday.

Since the virus hit the state in March, a total of 294,091 cases and 6,669 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported.

Gov. Tate Reeves announced during Tuesday’s press conference that first responders and K-12 teachers and staff will be eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccinations starting Monday.

According to a New York Times database on Saturday, at least 2,266 new coronavirus deaths and 78,262 new cases were reported in the U.S. Friday. Over the past week, there has been an average of 69,483 cases per day, a decrease of 29% from the average two weeks earlier.

January saw the most deaths in a single month in Mississippi, with 1,240 coronavirus-related deaths. The single-day record of 98 deaths was reported Jan. 12. On Jan. 7, the state reported a single-day record of 3,255 new cases of the coronavirus.

Residents between the ages of 25 and 39 represent the largest portion of the infected population in the state, with 64,245 cases reported Tuesday, the latest figure available. Among patients under 18, children between the ages of 11 and 17 have the highest infection rate, with 22,334 cases identified. The 65 and older age group has the highest total number of deaths with 5,066 reported.

According to health department data, 381,249 people have begun the vaccination process in Mississippi as of Friday. About 191,874 people have been fully immunized against COVID-19 since the shots began in December.

Some 273,437 people are presumed recovered from the virus as of Tuesday, the latest figure available, according to the health department’s website.

DeSoto County has the highest number of reported cases in the state with 19,626, followed closely by Hinds County with 18,745, Harrison County with 16,618, Rankin County with 12,662 and Jackson County with 12,509.
