Coronavirus in Mississippi: 390 new cases, no deaths reported Sunday

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 390 new cases of COVID-19 and  no coronavirus-related deaths on Sunday.

Since the virus hit the state in March, a total of 290,632 cases and 6,553 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported.

According to a New York Times database on Sunday, at least 1,831 new coronavirus deaths and 69,729 new cases were reported in the U.S. Saturday. Over the past week, there has been an average of 67,628 cases per day, a decrease of 44% from the average two weeks earlier.

January saw the most deaths in a single month in Mississippi, with 1,240 coronavirus-related deaths. The single-day record of 98 deaths was reported Jan. 12. On Jan. 7, the state reported a single-day record of 3,255 new cases of the coronavirus.

There are currently 93 outbreaks at Mississippi nursing homes. There have been 10,364 cases of the coronavirus in long-term care facilities and 1,937 deaths reported as of Saturday, the latest figures available.

Residents between the ages of 25 and 39 represent the largest portion of the infected population in the state, with 63,693 cases reported Tuesday, the latest figure available. Among patients under 18, children between the ages of 11 and 17 have the highest infection rate, with 22,157 cases identified. The 65 and older age group has the highest total number of deaths with 5,004 reported.

According to health department data, 333,211 people have begun the vaccination process in Mississippi as of Sunday. About 137,909 people have been fully immunized against COVID-19 since the shots began in December.

Some 264,456 people are presumed recovered from the virus as of Tuesday, the latest figure available, according to the health department’s website.

DeSoto County has the highest number of reported cases in the state with 19,415, followed closely by Hinds County with 18,532, Harrison County with 16,347, Rankin County with 12,483 and Jackson County with 12,372.
