Coronavirus in Mississippi: 271 new cases, 16 deaths reported Thursday

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 271 new cases of COVID-19 and 16 coronavirus-related deaths on Thursday.

Since the virus hit the state in March 2020, a total of 305,417 cases and 7,048 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported. 

According to a New York Times database on Thursday, at least 1,138 new coronavirus deaths and 68,162 new cases were reported in the U.S. Over the past week, there has been an average of 64,396 cases per day, an increase of 17% from the average two weeks earlier.

There were 15 outbreaks at Mississippi nursing homes as of Thursday. There have been 10,438 cases of the coronavirus in long-term care facilities and 1,972 deaths reported as of Thursday, the latest figures available.

Residents between the ages of 25 and 39 represent the largest portion of the infected population in the state, with 67,233 cases reported Tuesday, the latest figure available. Among patients under 18, children between the ages of 11 and 17 have the highest infection rate, with 23,506 cases identified. The 65 and older age group has the highest total number of deaths with 5,378 reported.

According to health department data, 776,833 people have begun the vaccination process in Mississippi, as of Wednesday morning. Since December, about 482,783 people are fully immunized against COVID-19.

Approximately 292,872 people are presumed recovered from the virus as of Tuesday, the latest figure available, according to the health department’s website.

DeSoto County has the highest number of reported cases in the state with 20,555, followed closely by Hinds County with 19,700, Harrison County with 17,382, Rankin County with 13,229 and Jackson County with 13,037.
